The foyer has a big responsibility- it has so many jobs! It’s a place for your keys, your coats, the mail and your shoes. It holds backpacks, sports equipment and that lost permission slip. UGH! To say that this space needs to be functional is an understatement. But, functionality is the first step. The space should also offer great design. It’s where you welcome your guests, offers a glimpse into your home and begins to tell your story. And, one more wrinkle in the foyer design obstacle…maneuvering the layout. Some foyers are large, some are small. Some with massive walls to fill, some with nothing but doors. Some lead straight into a staircase while other open right into the living room. Some are dark and some bright. Some have huge closets, some just a hook on a wall. But, all have the opportunity to be beautiful!
The Oakland Project foyer falls into the large foyer, no walls, open doorways into the living & dining room- category. What we did have was a nice sized corner nestled next to the staircase to work with. The goal was to create a spot to welcome guests, give them a place to sit or leave their bag. A long narrow bench seemed expected -and we definitely didn’t want to to do anything “expected”!- so, instead we opted for a swoon-worthy corner chair, accent table and beveled window pane mirror. The end result is a corner full of form and function. A beautiful vase and fresh floral complete the space! Take a look….
